Introduction to Mentoring for Diversity Program: Bridging Histories, Fostering Equity
In the tapestry of Gloucestershire's history, there exists a poignant thread woven by Caribbean people who, during and after the war, answered the call to service and contributed to rebuilding Britain. This resonant history, coupled with the 75th anniversary of the NHS, serves as a powerful backdrop for our Mentoring for Diversity program.
The Historical Tapestry: Caribbean individuals, often referred to as the Windrush Generation, played an integral role in the development of the NHS. The launch of the first NHS building in Great Western Road in Gloucester marked a milestone, and 75 years since the NHS's inception in 1948 is a momentous occasion. As Gloucestershire commemorates this event, we reflect on the outstanding achievements of the local NHS and its partners, highlighting progress in staff skills, medical advancements, and technological innovations that continue to shape health and care.
Valerie Simms and the Mentoring Visionaries: At the helm of our Mentoring for Diversity program is Valerie Simms, a visionary leader committed to transforming the narrative of health equity in Gloucester. Supported by three dedicated trustees, Blanche McCalla and Sharon Bryan, and an ensemble of eight community leaders, each steering organizations that uplift people of color and their families, the program is poised to create lasting change.
The Imperative for Mentoring: Recognizing the fundamental importance of the NHS to Gloucestershire's residents, the Mentoring for Diversity program is a response to an imperative need. It emerges from a profound understanding of the highs and lows in the relationship between the Black community and healthcare services. This program goes beyond symbolic gestures; it aims to create a strong, enduring relationship with all services. Valerie Simms and her team are acutely aware of the necessity to give the Black community a voice and platform.
Journey with NHS Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board: The Mentoring for Diversity program is in collaboration with the NHS Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board, symbolizing a commitment to bridging historical gaps and forging a path toward a more inclusive and equitable future. It is a journey that acknowledges the importance of forming robust relationships with all services to support the Black community comprehensively.
Mission to Improve Health and Well-being: Aligned with the founding principles of the NHS, the Mentoring for Diversity program's vision is rooted in caring with compassion and kindness. It's a commitment to improving health, enhancing access to quality care, and making Gloucestershire a better place for the future. In collaboration with the NHS, the mission is to champion equity in life chances and strive for the best health and care outcomes for all communities.
As we embark on this journey, the Mentoring for Diversity program is not just an initiative; it's a testament to the power of collaboration, thy, and the collective will to create a healthier and more equitable Gloucestershire.

Welcome to Walk in my shoes (WIMS)
WALK IN MY SHOES (WIMS) emerged organically from the heart of Black and Ethnic Led community discussions with the local Gloucestershire NHS. This initiative was sparked by the efforts of Bren McInerney and community lead Valerie Simms, who organized events in December 2019 and February 2020. The primary goal was to channel a wealth of knowledge to the Black and Ethnic community groups, delving into specific topics such as Mental Health, Sickle Cell, Maternity services (Postnatal), as well as addressing the broader spectrum of diversity and cultural requirements of these communities. The overarching objective was to provide a platform for constructive inquiry, challenge the status quo, and assess how NHS organizations were catering to the unique needs of the Black and Ethnic populations. Subsequent to these discussions, we have amassed evidence indicating that a profound understanding of the needs and cultural nuances of the local populace significantly influences health outcomes. In essence, this insight underscores the imperative to bridge the healthcare disparities gap by embracing diversity. Our vision encompasses two distinct yet interconnected avenues, each aimed at fostering Operation Better Outcomes, and each equipped with their own success metrics:
